At some posutional, however, you will also have to study positions with particular emphasis on identifying and implementing strategic ideas. One of the tried and true methods of gaining skill in this area is by collecting positions from grandmaster play, and studying them thoroughly.

Some have complained that since this book was published without the help of today’s strongest chess engines, that it cannot be any good. I think this misses the point. This book helps you develop your ability to identify and exploit key strategic elements of a given position.

The only way to develop this ability is by studying positions thoroughly. It matters not at all whether less israeo correct moves were played, or that the variations may be less than perfect. The point is that you have to study positions, be able to identify strategic objectives, and execute a plan. This book gives you important positions from grandmaster games, grouped into well known strategic themes. Having been relieved of the burden of finding positions in the first place, you are able to get handnook the hard work of studying immediately.

Tartajubow’s Chess Books and Equipment: Positional Chess Handbook by Israel Gelfer

Finding just the right examples from among the millions of master games is by far the israle part of assembling a work such as this. The annotations are just right for me: On point, insightful, and they don’t explain the obvious but give lines that show clearly the dynamics of each vignette.

I’m a player, a strong expert or weak master, whichever way you want to view it. Anyone from Class A to GM would enjoy reading this book. There are better books, with more instructional prose annotations, for players under or so.

The hancbook and printing quality of this book was a real disappointment. It was printed on pulp paper, just a bit heavier than the stuff newspapers are printed on, and the diagrams are so faintly printed hwndbook eye has to strain to see where ches the pieces are.

No big deal to do once, but doing it times unnecessarily taxes the reader. A five-star book produced by a two-star publisher yields four stars. Gelfer’s book is fantastic. What’s not fantastic is the poor job that Dover or their POD provider did on this reprint.

The diagrams are dark, the pieces are hard to distinguish from one another in anything other than sunlight, and there’s significant bleed due to the thin paper.

Follows the Russian school method of critical positions to remember and aim for. A great study book for the average to advance player. This is an excelelnt book for players that ar already tactical and are looking to increase their positional awareness.

I say its a book for those This is a nice book to learn how to analyze games sort of like an introduction to analysis. What I mean is other poritional books are very detail and many lines and this is good if you been doing it a while, bt if your starting analyses to move on to the next level this works great, it categorzied by themes like key squares and real games are use, so you will develop an understand of positions.

From this book you can graduate to full blown analysis games. This book has improved my understanding of many chess moves, and has made my ability to overwhelm my opponent, post haste! I am an avid player and own an extensive collection of chess books.

As most chess fans have probably discovered, a lot of chess books are simply the same ideas rehashed and presented with different games. This book however, is a refreshing break from the rest, presenting strategic play in a condensed format with great exemplars of the theme discussed. Honestly, probably one of the best books on the game that I’ve read. Short, sweet and to the point–highly recommended!
