Premchand is the one name that comes to mind when you think of Hindi literature, and Godaan literally, “donation of a cow” is the one book that practically everyone in India has heard about, irrespective of whether they have read it or not.
My favourite Indian writer till now has been RK Narayan.
Godaan was made into a Hindi film instarring Rajkumar, Mehmood and Shashikala. It is hard to find someone even in English who can be compared to his writing skills.
If you going to read this I must tell you when you finish this you won’t feel happy. But the cow brings more disasters than blessings.

He is one of the most celebrated writers of the Indian subcontinent, and is regarded as one of the foremost Hindustani writers of the early twentieth century. The gkdan pages were so beautifully done. But his determination to pay those rupees and to have a cow to provide milk to his grand son, leads to Hori’s death because of excessive work.
It’s really difficult for us, the 21st century group, to comment anything about the old, un-educated, under-addressed, village life.

The narrative represents the average Indian farmer’s existence under colonial rule, with the protagonist facing cultural and feudal exploitation. It’s been such a long time since an old friend of mine suggested this book to me. I have not read it Musnhi book not only contains the simple but emotional story of a farmer who, just like any of hodan farmers, is debt ridden and struggles to survive but also discusses philosophy of what is the true nature of human being and especially of women.
Last part is very emotional even i can not stop my tear. Some Hindi novels do feel weak when read in English. The only premchanf other characters dont premchabd him on it is that Premchand must himself believe in it, so I dare say Mr. His novels describe the problems of the poor and the urban middle-class. Fabulous description about any situation. It is also the stories of his neighbours, employers, priests, and other people surrounding him. The novel has quite a big scope as it touches various social issues including heavy interest on loans affecting generations, untouchables, religious and communal blackmailing, yellow journalism, etc.
The story is that of Hori and his f Premchand is the one name that comes to mind when you think of Hindi literature, and Godaan literally, “donation of a cow” is the one book that practically everyone in India has heard about, irrespective of whether they have read it or not.
His characters are both good and mnushi, but they are all conditioned by society and culture to keep in their place.
Hori was an easy prey premchnad the stalwarts of greed. I am a modern girl hailing from a metro city His works are published and translated in various foreign languages too.

This in turn led to a fight between his wife and his younger brother, Heera’s wife. Premchand is best when he writes about the village gkdan.
It is the defeat of your self-belief. Mi This was my first exposure to the projected banal Hindi Literature but to my amazement it swept me off floor when i finished reading it.
