The Hinds version, though, has enlivened the story for me and does make me want to reread the original.

These scenes are completely absent of text, but Hinds’s illustrations are full of texture and meaning, thus telling the story as well as any accompanying text could have. I think it was easier when I was reading it with the class and talking about it with the teacher. Having not read the original epic poem this graphic novel is my primary source of understanding for what is considered the oldest surviving long beowulr in Old English and one of the most important works in Old English Literature.

But it reads more like a synopsis of Beowulf.

Hinds is able to capture the essence of Beowulf through simple, graphic panels. Some will argue that this moral is less applicable to a contemporary audience, but I would argue that, as corny as it may sound, the virtues of selflessness are timeless. The most vibrant colors are those of fire and sky; the flames and their emanating light bring life to the drab setting and the night sky is a deep and unworldly blue.

Since all of the films were spoken for and since Beowulf never made a record as far as he knowshe opted to review this comic because he also likes comics. Speeches filled with courage and sadness, lightning-paced contests of muscle and will, and funeral boats burning on the fjords are all rendered in glorious and gruesome detail.
